The University
The University of Duisburg-Essen is Germany’s youngest university. It was created on 1 January 2003 through a merger of the formerly independent universities of Duisburg and Essen, both founded in 1972. The University of Duisburg-Essen has three campuses: one in Duisburg, two in Essen. About 33,000 students are enrolled, among them about 4,300 foreign students from more than 120 countries. Despite its large numbers of students, Duisburg-Essen is not a mass university. It is quite easy to find your way around all the campuses since all buildings are located centrally and can be reached within a few minutes’ walk.
Departments and schools
Consisting of 13 departments, the university offers a broad spectrum of academic disciplines. Our courses of study and areas of research are roughly allocated to our campuses in the following way:
- Duisburg and Essen both host important gateway disciplines like mathematics, computer science and economics.
- In Duisburg, the stress is on the social and political sciences as well as on engineering and natural sciences.
- On the main Campus in Essen, the focus is on the humanities, art and design as well as on the life sciences.
- The second campus in Essen is devoted to medical science and organised around a huge university medical centre.
