The Instituto Superior Técnico is the largest and most prestigious school of Engineering, Science & Technology and Architecture in Portugal. It is part of the Universidade de Lisboa and was founded in 1911. The school develops strong research and development activities with the highest international standards thanks to a large degree of scientific and financial autonomy.

It has three campi, all of which are located in the Greater Lisbon area. The institut offers 18 undergraduate, 33 masters, and 31 doctoral programmes at ten Departments and an Autonomous Section responsible for teaching the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. As of today the school hosts 11234 students, 6491 of which are bachelor students, 3652 master, and 1091 PhD.

The university further benefits from an IBM supercomputer build in 2007 achieving 1.6 TFLOPS, making it on of the most powerful in Portugal.

LisbonFounded in 1911, the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) was first lead from 1911-1922 by Alfredo Bensaúde, an Engineer and promoter of a wide-range reform in the Portuguese higher technical education. He was succeeded by Duarte Pacheco (1927-1932) who was responsible for the construction of the Alameda campus. During this time IST was integrated into the recently founded Technical University of Lisbon.

Between 1952 and 1972, 3 study centres were established at IST in the fields Chemistry, Geology & Mineralogy, and Electronics. In 1970, the minimum period for obtaining a Bachelor degree was decreased and the university henceforth denoted a remarkable increase in the number of students.

The Complexo Interdisciplinar fastened together various previously autonomous research units, thereby increasing the scientific research done at IST and further establishing the school as a reference school at European level.
In the 1990s, new courses were created in cutting-edge engineering areas, including Master and Doctoral programs. The TagusPark as a new campus was inaugurated in 2001. It is surrounded by more than 120 technology-based companies.

Today, IST is recognized as a Great School of Engineering, Architecture and Science & Technology in Portugal with outstanding research being conducted in association with several universities from all around the globe. IST is involved in more than 20 Dual-Master programs and joint PhD programs withMIT, CMU, UT-Austin and EPFL.
