City of Jyväskylä

The city of Jyväskylä is located in the middle of Finnland and is the capital of province of Central Finland. The meaning of the name of the city consists of two parts. First the 'jyväs' refers to the sun's reflection of the surface of the water and 'kylä' means village. Jyväskylä was founded in 1837 and has around 130 thousand inhabitants and is one of the fastest growing cities within Finland. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is about 270 kilometers away from Jyväskylä.
J603 Jyvaeskylae Centeryväskylä is surrounded by a hilly, forested terrain and hundreds of lakes. In summertime it is warm and in wintertime cold and snowy. The nickname of Jyväskylä is the 'Athens of Finland' because of its education. It was the first place in the world which provided education in Finnish.
