The City of Wrocław

675 image002If this is your first time in Wroclaw, prepare to get starry-eyed – this dame has it all, from high breeding and good looks, to cultural clout and an up-for-anything attitude. Reared at the crossroads of Europe and endowed with equal parts Austrian Hapsburg charm, Prussian pride, Polish playfulness and Bohemian rhapsody, it’s easy to see why every duke, emperor and chancellor in the land was ready to wage a war or two just to share a table with this Silesian lady.

The city of Wrocław boasts fascinating architecture, many rivers and bridges, and a lively metropolitan cultural scene. It is a city with a troubled past, having seen much violence and devastation, and it was almost completely destroyed during the Second World War. However, it has been restored and now is one of the highlights of Poland, and the entire central European region.

Wrocław is the fourth biggest city in Poland and the economic, cultural676 image004and intellectual capital of Lower Silesia. It is one of the largest university centers in the country. The city’s intellectual life is focused around 13 academic schools such as the University of Wrocław, Wrocław University of Technology, and Wrocław University of Economics. Wrocław is situated on the Odra (Oder) River, just north of the Sudety Mountains. It is close to both Germany and the Czech Republic. Cut through by the river and its many tributaries and canals, the city has a whole of 12 islands and 112 bridges.

It is also a crossing point of three international routes, has two large railway stations, two river ports and an international airport, ensuring easy connection with the whole world.

People coming to Wrocław remember the city mainly as a cultural and academic centre. Its theatres, clubs, museums and galleries provide a continuous series of artistic events. Internationally acknowledged musical festivals have become the city’s cultural landmark.
