Summer School on "Next Generation Enterprise Modelling" 2014

In today's enterprises, modelling methods are widely used on every level and they are mostly supported by modelling tools. These tools ease the design of machine-processable models and provide facility services, e.g. for accessing, exchanging and persistenly storing meta-models and models, for applying algorithms and querying model contents. Additionally they enhance the value of models as an organisational knowledge platforms.

Modelling tools and platforms which support domain specific methods need to provide user interaction functionalities and enable management capabilities for the execution environment in addition to the modelling method design and implementation.

The generic modelling method framework proposed by Karagiannis and Kühn (2001) comprises all the necessary ingredients for the conceptualization, i.e. early development and prototyping phases of modelling tools for domain specific modelling methods. The framework adresses (a) modelling languages - syntax, semantic and notation, (b) modelling procedures and (c) processing based on their mechanisms and algorithms.

The language of instruction for all lectures and working groups is English. Students must be able to follow lectures, express theirselves in discussions and write papers in English.

Topics covered in the course include:

  • Foundations of Conceptual Modelling, i.e. formal methods and tools for modelling method creation, transformation and application

  • Technologies for Conceptual Modelling, i.e. model execution technologies, meta-modelling platforms, modelling compilers, adaption to diverse devices and multi-client applications

  • Applications Domains, i.e. Enterprise Information Systems, e-Government, Health Care and Ambient Assisted Living.

  • Cross-cutting Issues, i.e. Information security, privacy, risk management and governance, and quality assurance of models and methods

Application and Fees

The "Next Generation Enterprise Modelling" summer school comprises not only courses dealing with foundations, technologies, application domains and cross-cutting issues of Conceptual Modelling, but also lodging, boarding as well as a social program for participants.

The summer school includes:

  • Registration

  • A two week program, where students will attend lectures in the morning and work on practical assignments in working groups each afternoon

  • Use of campus facilities

  • Handouts, case study books and other relevant teaching material

  • Accomodation, breakfast and lunch for two weeks. Students are accomodated in double rooms.

  • A social event on Saturday, July 12., 2014

  • Registration deadline: 31 January, 2014

The summer school can only be applied for as a complete programe. Participation in selected courses or at chosen times is not possible.

Bachelor and Master students from partner universities are eligible for an EU grant. This will cover travel costs as shown on receipts, but not higher than 500,00 Euro and a subsidy for accomodation costs of 317,00 Euro. Means of transport must be used in a cost efficient manner, i.e. economy class flight tickets, second class train tickets, buses and public means of transport, no taxis. 

Students from partner universities can choose to participate in social events. The overall costs for these will be 300,00 Euro. A detailed list of social events planned will be made available by April 2014.

Bachelor, Master and PhD students from non-partner universities as well as PhD students from partner universities are required to pay for their own transportation costs. Accomodation as well as social events are covered by a registration fee of 600,00 Euro per student.

Students will not incurr any fees for their participation at the summer school courses or for the course materials.

Applicants must be enrolled at an university either as Bachelor, Master or PhD-students. If they are on a Bachelor level, applicants must have completed at least 4 semesters of their studies. Master and PhD-students are eligible at any point in their study programmes.

If selected applicants must attend for the whole duration of the summer school. They must take part in the lectures, participate in the working groups and are expected to have an adequate command of the English language.


The summer school will take place at the Alpen-Adria-Universität Klagenfurt, Universitätsstr. 65-67, Klagenfurt.

Klagenfurt is the sixth biggest city in Austria and the capital of Carinthia. Known for its natural beauty the city borders the beautiful Wörthersee, the city has a mild summer climate and famous sights like the "Lindwurm" and the "Wörter-See-Mandl".
